Repertoire

People often ask me what songs I sing when I get up on stage. The list below seeks to enumerate every song that I’ve sung at least once. Undoubtedly, many tunes are missing from this list; there’s no way I’ll ever come close to remembering every single song that I performed in my over 20 years of karaoke before I started this blog and created this page.

The inclusion of any given song on this list should not be taken to imply that you’ll ever hear it from me again. I’m constantly workshopping new material, and not all of those experiments are successful. Sometimes, it’s instantly clear that a song is ill-suited to my vocal range, or is otherwise not a good candidate to become a part of the H-Bomb canon.

My “A-list,” consisting of my top go-to songs, currently includes, in no particular order:

• “La Bamba”
• “New York State Of Mind”
• “At This Moment”
• “My Life”
• “True”
• “(I’m Gonna Be) 500 Miles”
• “What Is Love”
• “Rocket Man”
• “Rock The Casbah”
• “Oh, Pretty Woman”
• “Use Somebody”
• “Let’s Dance”
• “Walking In Memphis”

My very first signature song, dating back to 1991, was Barry Manilow’s “Copacabana.” However, for reasons discussed here, Barry Manilow is now dead to me and it no longer brings me joy to sing his material. I still put “Copa” on my song slips occasionally, because it does get a crowd fired up; but Barry no longer has the honor of residing on my A-list.

Here’s the complete catalog of all the songs I’ve performed from 1991 to date (and the list is constantly being expanded as I continue to sing new songs):

Besides the two songs that you mentioned…are there any songs you refuse to do for any political/religious reasons? Or, some that you flat out hate?

    • @Ulysses: Those are good questions. (1) With Barry it was purely personal. While there are some singers whose politics I disagree with, I have never refused a song on political or religious grounds. If I like the song and I think I won’t totally suck at it, I’ll try singing it. (2) I tend to get sick of songs that are overexposed. For example, a year or two ago I would hear “Don’t Stop Believing” every. damn. night. at karaoke (and sometimes multiple times in the same night). During the decade of the 2000s, “Summer Nights” had a similar status. There’ve been a few others in the same category too. These are often songs that I started out liking a lot, but after having to listen to them so much I grew weary of them (and once the frequency of hearing them diminishes to more normal levels, I will often grow to at least tolerate them again).

Farmer in the Dell? lol…how did that end up on your list lol?

    Like

    • @Kim: The short answer is that when I was 21 and doing karaoke for the first time, my knowledge of music was pitiful, and I just went for the first song in the book that I knew. Which happened to be a nursery rhyme. 🙂

  3. Happy New Year, H-Bomb!!! I´m Jeff and live in Brazil. I love karaoke, too. I noticed you have a song in your repertoire that I´m looking for years without finding it (I mean, in any midi file): valotte (Julian Lennon). By the way, would you have it? I would start 2014 happier if I got this song.
God bless you and have a very good karaoke time in 2014!
    Jeff, from Brazil!

    • @Jeff: Happy New year to you too! “Valotte” is a great song! I do not personally maintain any midi files; I sing at bars and restaurants that have karaoke. I know that “Valotte” is a very hard song to find; I think I’ve only ever been to one venue that had it.

      Google and ye shall receive.

I don’t know about MIDI, but Amazon has an MP3 file: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00C5ZOJBY

      If you’re looking for CD+G, the (discontinued) SoundChoice “80’s & 90’s Volume 2” disc has it: http://www.acekaraoke.com/sscg8942eg.html

I found many more hits in my search, but I stopped after finding the SoundChoice disc. My own personal collection is CD+G and Super-CDG, and I SoundChoice usually has the more accurate performances.
